Abstract:
Nietzsche’s prophet protagonist, Zarathustra, sometimes seeks to avoid or curtail engagement with others, including dialogical engagement about beliefs, in order to pursue and protect his arguably political ends (the creation of new values). He calls this practice of selective withdrawal from engagement “passing by.” In this paper, which is part of an in-progress book manuscript, I show how Zarathustra’s practice of passing by arises from an acute sense of the limits and toll of speaking to others, especially for anyone who strives, as Zarathustra does, to create a radically new future.
